How can I pay less
tax?
If you do locums, either full time or occasionally, or
have private work, you do have a choice on how your income should
be taxed regardless of grade or specialty. McKenzie Knight &
Partners have assisted thousands of doctors to tailor a package
that is tax effective to their own individual circumstances. The
crucial factor in helping you to avoid paying too much tax is based
on your sources of income and how you are employed. The way your
colleagues may be operating is not necessarily the best option for
you.
A high percentage of UK and overseas doctors pay
too much tax so it is not only your legal responsibility but also
to your advantage to ensure your tax affairs are fully up to date.
This will also enable you to reclaim any overpaid tax. It is not
a prerequisite that you have to complete tax returns, however many
doctors who only have one job, which is taxed at source must complete
tax returns each year.
How does UK
tax affect me?
The onus of responsibility is upon all UK taxpayers to
familiarise themselves with their rights and obligations under the
Self Assessment tax laws, which came into force 6th April 1996.
Failure to do so may result in fines, penalties and as a worst-case
scenario, court proceedings. The Inland Revenue will not accept
ignorance or the pressure of your job as an excuse.
